Joywave are at an exciting point in their career. Not only have the act survived the pressures of their major-label debut and the dreaded sophomore slump, they’ve established themselves as the kind of band that you’re as likely to hear at a hip record store as you are at the grocery store. That said, there’s a difference between ubiquity and evolution and with their fifth full-length Permanent Pleasure, Joywave—vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Daniel Armbruster, guitarist Joseph Morinelli and drummer Paul Brenner—lean into guitar and string sections without sacrificing the signature sound that’s endeared the band to countless fans, whether they know it or not, over the past eleven years.
Rochester, New York, isn’t necessarily known for its bustling entertainment industry, but it is rich in culture and creativity. The trio’s hometown is integral not only to the theme of Permanent Pleasure (audio samples from 1984 historical compilation release, The Rochester Sesquicentennial, bookend the album), but also to Joywave’s overall identity. Despite international acclaim and major-label success, the band maintain a DIY work ethic that keeps them grounded in the present moment while always reaching toward the future. We go to our studio and make a record with total creative freedom, and we turn it in and the label tells us we did a great job,” Armbruster explains. This arrangement is a rarity in the music industry these days—but like all things Joywave, somehow it works out in a way that makes perfect sense for them.
Once again produced by Armbruster at the band’s own Rochester-based studio, The Joycave , Permanent Pleasure is an unfiltered vision of the band’s creativity that sees them stepping outside of their sonic comfort zone. “I think this is probably our least keyboard [heavy] record,” Armbruster explains, adding that in some ways Permanent Pleasure was a reaction to the more cohesive and linear construction of 2022’s Cleanse. “On Permanent Pleasure we blew everything apart again: We’re switching out drum components and everything we can between songs and freeing ourselves again from the box of ‘it has to be super cohesive’ because I always want to rage against what we did last time. But five records in, we’re a lot better at writing and recording, so it’s bringing back a little bit of the all-over vibe of the first record, but on the other side of the experience. We’ve gone through a wormhole.”
That feeling of artistic liberation is the unifying sonic characteristic of the album, from the futuristic downtempo groove of “Sleepytime Fantasy” to the hypnotic dancefloor vibe of “Brain Damage.” Permanent Pleasure also sees the band expanding their own musical conventions, the most obvious being the fact that they enlisted an actual orchestra to play on these songs instead of relying solely on software as they have in the past. “We’ve always done virtual instruments before, but we wanted to have it real this time around, so we had the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra play on five of these songs,” Morinelli, who wrote out the sheet music for them, explains. That amalgamation of electronic and organic instrumentation is evident on songs like “He’s Back,” which is political, personal, petrifying, and playful, seemingly all at once.
However as much as Joywave are pushing toward the future with this album, there’s also an element of nostalgia present in these songs as the trio look back at what they’ve built since they began playing together as on shimmering pop songs like “Swimming In The Glow.” “That song harkens back to an era of Joywave before we were in the beam and before anyone really cared what we did; it really draws lyrically on that time in my life of feeling like me, Paul and Joey had everything all together,” Armbruster explains. “Sonically, I think that song is a side of the band that I think people who have heard our 2012 EP Koda Vista know is there. It’s a side of the band that I think people who saw us in our very early days at local clubs like Bug Jar know is there, but I think it’s something that deserved to be in the spotlight.”
“I want to touch you but I’m scared,” Armbruster sings on the infectious single “Scared,” an ode to codependency that’s as much about connection as it is existential dread—and ultimately that dichotomy between humor and hopelessness lies at the core of Permanent Pleasure. “I think the job of an artist is to explore any side of being a person and self-awareness is a huge part of being a person,” Armbruster summarizes. “I think artists who ignore humor aren’t being true to themselves and it’s a huge part of who we are despite having thoughts on the record that are on the darker side of things. I feel like you have to wink a little bit to make it okay. You have to make a joke about the asteroid as the asteroid is about to hit.”

Cleanse is Joywave’s fourth studio album and is the follow-up to 2020’s Possession which released on March 13th 2020 as the world shut down. With a virus ravaging the world and no possibility of touring for the foreseeable future, Joywave frontman Daniel Armbruster was once again able to dig into his own psyche and see what surfaced. The 10 tracks that make up Cleanse were conceived, written and recorded in Armbruster’s home studio when “reminders of our fragile mortality were everywhere, punctuated by the ongoing pandemic and civil unrest,” he notes. “Cleanse became the words, encouragement, and occasional cautions that I would want to share with you if this was the last time we spoke,” Armbruster reflects. Highlights on the album include the catchy and clever “Buy American, “ the introspective “After Coffee” which celebrates the pleasures of the mundane, the ambient groove of “Pray For The Reboot,” the brooding and expansive “The Inversion” and “Every Window Is A Mirror” which according to Armbruster recalls “our inability to understand the experiences of others.”
THE INSIDE TRACK
“This is the first time since Joywave has been a known entity that I can remember no one explicitly asking me to make a record. Our third LP, “Possession”, came out March 13th 2020, and the world stopped just a few days later. Our whole album cycle was dead on arrival. We had spent close to 18 months making and setting up that record. It was crushing to watch everything we had worked so hard to roll out in just the right way obliterated in an instant.
But creatively, the timing couldn’t have been better. Something more positive began to emerge. With our dense touring schedule shelved, I was able to reflect on past travels and appreciate them in a new way. But reminders of our fragile mortality were everywhere, punctuated by the ongoing pandemic and civil unrest. The music began to encompass all of this. It became the words, encouragement, and occasional cautions that I would want to share with you if this was the last time we spoke. And with all this time spent looking inward came the realization that there were still a few chips I was carrying on my shoulder that I needed to let go of. Maybe you have those too.
One of my first jobs ever was at a car wash. I thought of the band, after years spent on the road taking a breather. Going through that wash process. Watching all the dirt and mud stripped away. Coming out the other side refreshed and rejuvenated. Still having experienced everything from before, but no longer wearing the scars.
Welcome to Cleanse – Daniel Armbruster

Lyrics:
It’s midnight
When the truth’s in the user, we’ve all lost the future
A timeline
Darker than the one I was dealing with the last time
No help, no help
The world’s gone crazy, it’s on something lately
No help, no help
Just pray for the reboot
And when the call goes out again
I hope they give me that part
Big names are in
We’ll take it back to the start
We’ll take it back to the start
Hold tight
You can wish me luck but don’t throw me a lifeline
A quick decline
Hit rock bottom and wait for the the green light
No help, no help
The world’s gone crazy, it’s on something lately
No help, no help
Just pray for the reboot
And when the call goes out again
I hope they give me that part
Big names are in
We’ll take it back to the start
Almost believable, it’s achievable
But can we make it less dark?
When the call goes out again
We’ll take it back to the start
We’ll take it back to the start

Lyrics:
Don’t care. Buy American.
Think less. if it hurts more, baby
Live, laugh. Like I always say
When it breaks we’ll get the whole thing replaced
We could be better now, than we have ever been
It’s not that difficult, a few adjustments
Let go of selflessness
It only holds you back
Why would you bother with a thing that others lack?
We could be happy for a moment
Duty free, feeling like a kid again
So don’t care. Buy American.
Think less. If it hurts more, baby
Live, laugh. Like I always say
When it breaks we’ll get the whole thing replaced
We could do better now, than we have ever done
We’re hitting heights never seen by anyone
Let go of empathy
That negativity
Why are you worried ‘bout someone you’ve never met?
We could be happy for a moment
(Happy for a moment here)
So don’t care. Buy American.
Think less. If it hurts more, baby
Live, laugh. Like I always say
When it breaks we’ll get the whole thing replaced

Lyrics:
Basking in the blue glow
All the copy/pasted housing in a row
When everything is airtight
And energy efficient, up to code
Yeah, every window is a mirror
Breathing in the cool air
Conditioned for your comfort, built to last
Humming with approval
But living carbon neutral fogs the glass
Yeah, every window is a mirror
Everything that you thought, confirmed
Every fear you had lost returns
A film that you just can’t wash has emerged
But you cleanse, you cleanse, you cleanse
Yeah, every window is a mirror

Lyrics:
The last idea I had got swallowed by a black hole
I could cure cancer but they’d give the prize to some asshole
Wasting time, everybody’s in your mind
Yeah you coulda done it first
But the fit just wasn’t right
You’re here, but look at the others
They got more than you, so you need another
You had nothing, then you did the numbers
But if you’d change your view you’d see
There’s nowhere better to be
Step outside of the pre-drawn lines I’ve assembled
Help me find a balance in the malice I don’t want to be cynical
Wasting time, everybody’s in your mind
Yeah you coulda done it first
But the market wasn’t right
You’re here, but look at the others
They got more than you, so you need another
You had nothing, then you did the numbers
But if you’d change your view you’d see
There’s nowhere better to be
I don’t want to be cynical
I don’t want to be cynical
There’s nowhere better to be, yeah
There’s nowhere better to be, yeah yeah yeah
There’s nowhere better to be

Lyrics:
This morning was lovely, I woke up in my bed again
I poured the granola, I got out the butter and bread
I reached in the cupboard for sugar and vitamin C
I threw out a tablet of expired Dramamine
After coffee, sitting all alone in thought
Wondering if I should give it up
Move away and find a little spot on the coast
No reception and my secret goes unknown
But I’m too scared to jump
Yeah, I’m too scared to jump
Yeah, I’m too scared to jump
This morning was perfect, the cat woke me quarter to ten
You turned on Nintendo while we discuss government
After coffee, sitting all alone in thought
Wondering if I should give it up
Move away and find a little spot on the coast
No reception and my secret goes unknown
But I’m too scared to jump
Yeah, I’m too scared to jump
Yeah, I’m too scared to jump

Lyrics:
I was a boy who kept a list of everybody who wouldn’t let me in
Sense of humor now about it but there’s jadedness where love should
have been
Drove around town ’til the last stone thrown was hollow
Wait a couple years and now all I’ve got left is sorrow, ‘cause I’ve
found
We are all we need
We got them other boys talking nervously
We are all we need
We got them all to take a swing with jealousy
I build a shell to insulate me from the winter and the weight of the
Earth
But I found it filtered out compassion, always laughing takes a toll
on your worth
Drove around town ’til the last stone thrown was hollow
Wait a couple years and now all I’ve got left is sorrow, ‘cause I’ve
found
We are all we need
We got them other boys talking nervously
We are all we need
We got them all to take a swing with jealousy
Now I know, now I know
We are all we need
We got them other boys talking nervously
We are all we need
We got them all to take a swing with jealousy

Lyrics:
Tommy went down to the discotheque
That was his only crime
Tommy went out to dance the last night
Tommy down to the discotheque
Bravest little guy I know
Tommy went out to catch the late show
But it all went wrong
Now the innocent are gone
Goodbye Tommy, you’ll be missed
Cherish the last three kisses on your lips
Oh Tommy, poor Tommy
Goodbye Tommy, it ends like this
In a flash of light and nothingness
Oh Tommy, poor Tommy
Tommy went down to the discotheque
Bravest little guy I know
Tommy went down in a discotheque
Yeah it all went wrong
Haven’t seen him in so long
Goodbye Tommy, you’ll be missed
Cherish the last three kisses on your lips
Oh Tommy, poor Tommy
Goodbye Tommy, it ends like this
In a flash of light and nothingness
Oh Tommy, poor Tommy
She waits by the phone
But he ain’t coming home

Lyrics:
Oh it’s sad to watch it happen
Push and pull have given way to shove
The inversion has begun
Up is down and left is right
Don’t think too hard, thought’s in short supply
There’s nowhere left to run
Two tabs, pay your ransom
Your conversion’s here, there’s a new anthem
As you fall inside, but it looks just like your home
Two tabs, that’s some bad shit
Yeah your breathe tattoo isn’t helping one bit
As you fall inside and the vapor turns to stone
The darkest part of every mind
Unchained and free, seeking out its kind
The inversion’s finally come
Black is white and day is night
No logic here, you do not decide
Your will will not be done
Two tabs, pay your ransom
Your conversion’s here, there’s a new anthem
As you fall inside, but it looks just like your home
Two tabs, that’s some bad shit
Yeah your breathe tattoo isn’t helping one bit
As you fall inside and the vapor turns to stone
Tell me, don’t lie, tell me don’t lie
Tell me what’s left of the other side to save
(Nothing there remains)

Lyrics:
Out at the party, no one to meet
Wine and spirits in front of me
Mixing elixirs and alchemy
Trying to turn back maturity
Why would you want to be young again?
Taxed by your fears, not your government
Why would you want to be young again?
Who has the time for the suffering?
On an elliptical pedaling
Extra life with nowhere to be
Counting distance and calories
Trying to bring back those youthful knees
Why would you want to be young again?
Taxed by your fears, not your government
Why would you want to be young again?
Who has the time for the suffering?
Why would you want to be young again?
Free from your debts, not your trespasses

Lyrics:
I feel the purpose fade
I try to learn to make a month evaporate
A century to make
A bad forecast washed the whole thing away
It’s just a rain delay, I’m sure it’s fine
We’re holding time
No pleasure and no pain
I ask you
Have you ever lit a year on fire?
(You are, you are)
I smell the lilacs now
I see the people pouring out of their houses
All the data down
Getting louder but still I sit in silence
It’s just a rain delay, I’m sure it’s fine
We’re holding time
No pleasure and no pain
I ask you
Have you ever lit a year on fire?
(You are, you are)
Do you think we can get it back?
Back before the end?
Suspended animation
Back before the end

When Joywave formed in 2010, frontman Daniel Armbruster was writing and recording songs in his parents’ basement as he embarked on a fruitful period of self-discovery. Ironically, after spending the past ten years touring the world in support of three critically acclaimed albums, the new Joywave EP, Every Window Is A Mirror, was crafted under strikingly similar circumstances. “When I was making these songs, it was like I was back in my post-grad years, but it was in my basement now,” Armbruster recalls with a laugh. “I thought, okay, what do I want to do? There’s nobody here again.’” With a virus ravaging the world and no possibility of touring for the foreseeable future, Armbruster was once again able to dig into his own psyche and see what surfaced. “The writing this time was really introspective because I didn’t want to go upstairs and turn on the TV, you know?” he explains. “The only part of the world that made sense to me was my little corner where I’m making music.”
Over the past decade, that little corner has expanded from Armbruster’s parents’ house in Rochester, New York, to the Lollapalooza stage, tours with everyone from Bastille, Brandon Flowers to Young The Giant and late-night television appearances that have allowed Joywave to beam their infectious brand of indie rock into households all over the world. However, the release of the band’s 2020 album Possession admittedly felt a bit anticlimactic. “We released Possession on dare I say the worst possible day of March 13, 2020” Armbruster said with a sigh, adding that the band had just gotten back from Europe when the virus put everyone’s lives on pause. “So much time and effort had gone into that record and suddenly the touring cycle we had been planning on for the next year was already over when we landed at the Newark International airport.” Although Possession, which centered around themes of control and polarization was remarkably prescient, that’s little consolation to a band who thrives for live performances. “I feel like we made the record for right now last time, weirdly,” he explains.
Flash forward to now, their Every Window Is A Mirror EP is as much a commentary on the way things are currently as it is a look toward our collective future. It’s poetic without being preachy and is unabashedly Joywave in a way that further solidifies their sound as something that, like our world, is in a state of perpetual evolution. For this EP, Armbruster wrote demos and sent them to the band—drummer Paul Brenner, guitarist/bassist Joseph Morinelli and keyboardist Benjamin Bailey—before piecing together the resulting tracks in Armbruster’s basement studio. “The process itself was very different in that Paul and I were in the same room for three days and the other files were sent electronically,” Armbruster explains. “Weirdly, this is our most live-sounding record, which is funny because 90% of it is one guy sitting downstairs.” The dynamic sound of the EP is as much of a testament to the performances on the album as it is Armbruster’s production prowess, which combines organic and electronic elements into a soundscape that continues to unfold itself with each listen.
From the ambient, dancey groove of “Pray For The Reboot” to the brooding and expansive “The Inversion” and the bass-driven shuffle of “After Coffee,” the Every Window Is A Mirror EP has a melodic sensibility that serves as a constant between these four songs despite the fact that they all have their own unique musical personality. “I was very conscious of not doing the same thing again with these songs,” Armbruster explains. “Possession had the crazy production of [2015’s] How Do You Feel Now? and the increased emotional depth of [2017’s] Content, so for these songs it was important for me to move past that and bring something a little different to the table.” This sonic step forward is illustrated on the EP’s title track, which features a syncopated bass line, instantly infectious chorus and lyrics that somehow make the phrase “carbon neutral” sound catchy. There is also an element of honoring the beauty of simple pleasures during volatile times, something that Armbruster exemplifies on “After Coffee,” a song he describes as a “celebration of the mundane.”
“Normalcy is so beautiful when you’re coming from the chaos of Newark International Airport in 2020 coming back from Europe and you’re like, ‘Are they going to close the border?”’ Armbruster says of the track’s quotidian charm. “It’s definitely not a quarantine song, it’s just this thing that I think all touring people feel when you get back from tour of ‘Wait, I have to decide what’s for dinner? It doesn’t just show up?’” he adds with a laugh. “Once you’re home it’s a weird psychological adjustment. But the older I get the more I appreciate that when I’m home, this is where I’m being a person, not the other thing; the other thing is weird. It’s just celebrating that and cherishing those moments,” he adds. That said, the song is still inherently relatable if you don’t spend half of your year on the road.
Even now, there is a hopefulness that shines through on these songs that will undoubtedly resonate with the listener. “I still feel lucky to have that time even right now, it would be nice to go play the last record for people but having unchecked creative time, it’s not so bad,” Armbruster explains. A history major by nature, Armbruster is fascinated with this moment and the Every Window Is A Mirror EP is an aperture into Joywave’s creative process during it, which is as likely to inspire introspection as it is the urge to dance away the collective uncertainty of the moment. “If this is the last time that I get to talk to the audience or share my ideas with them, what do I want to say?” he summarizes. “Not only that, but what have I learned uniquely through this crazy life of mine that I can share with them?” If nothing else, this EP answers those questions in a way that is distinctively Joywave.

While fans wait for Permanent Pleasure to be unleashed into the world in May, Armbruster offered a glimpse into the album’s thematic universe saying, “Permanent Pleasure. A decade in the sunbeam. A unique vantage point. Our job has become to sit and think. To experience and react. The album is really 10 thoughts from Joywave’s beam. We’ve blown apart the cohesiveness of Cleanse and brought back more variation in sonic palette while simultaneously making a guitar and string forward record (less keys), but we’ve kept the advances in songwriting we’ve made along the way. It’s a bit more all over in the way How Do You Feel Now? was but with the songwriting we’ve come to be known for over the last several albums. I think most of the lyrics are taking place in the light as well, not loads of metaphors. Quite a bit more personal. The album is Joywave’s ‘whatever we want to do, whenever we want to do it’ at its best, and we loved the idea of the temporary state of the band name maturing into this album title.”
Armbruster also shared his inspiration behind new single “Scared,” “When I was growing up, every song about intimacy from the male perspective was oozing with confidence and sexual prowess. That just never felt honest or real to me and I wanted to make something for the next person growing up. It’s ok to not feel like that. Everyone’s experience is unique and different. There’s not something wrong with you. Hopefully, the song can add some balance to the intimate musical universe.”
Joywave’s latest single release and album announcement follow their triumphant sold-out North American tour run with Two Door Cinema Club, underscoring their reputation as a powerhouse live act and cementing their show as a must-see experience

Joywave released their 4th studio album, Cleanse, (listen HERE) in February and is the follow-up to 2020’s Possession. The title, Cleanse, is an overall reference to coming through a unique and troubling time with a refreshed and rejuvenated perspective on life. Highlights on the album include the catchy and clever “Buy American,“ the introspective “After Coffee” which celebrates the pleasures of the mundane, the ambient groove of “Pray For The Reboot,” the brooding and expansive “The Inversion” and “Every Window Is A Mirror” which according to Armbruster recalls “our inability to understand the experiences of others.”

Joywave’s album Cleanse was released today (listen HERE) marking the band’s 4th studio album and follow-up to 2020’s POSSESSION which came out on March 13th 2020, as the world shut down. Written and recorded during quarantine in Joywave frontman Daniel Armbruster’s home studio, aka the ‘Joycave,’ Armbruster had this to say about the making of Cleanse:
“With our dense touring schedule shelved, I was able to reflect on past travels and appreciate them in a new way. But reminders of our fragile mortality were everywhere, punctuated by the ongoing pandemic and civil unrest. The music began to encompass all of this. It became the words, encouragement, and occasional cautions that I would want to share with you if this was the last time we spoke.

“Cyn City 2000” is about being thankful for the things you have instead of focusing on what you don’t. Comparing yourself to others is a recipe for disaster every time. The pandemic allowed me to slow down and take in what we’ve been able to do over the last several years and left me feeling both grateful for the past and excited for the future.” – Daniel Armbruster

June 25, 2021 — Joywave released their Every Window is a Mirror EP today featuring the current single of the same name. Written and recorded during quarantine in the ‘Joycave,’ a reference to Joywave frontman Daniel Armbruster’s home studio, the EP also includes the ambient, dancey groove of “Pray For The Reboot,” the brooding and expansive “The Inversion” and “After Coffee,” a contemplative nod to the joys of the mundane. The title track has an instantly infectious chorus and speaks to self-reflection as we look out at others. Armbruster offers this insight on the song:
“The imagery in the song is thinking you’re looking through a clear pane of glass, only to discover upon further inspection that you can see yourself in it, some of the room you’re in reflected in it — and it might be a little dirtier than you thought when you’re up close.“

The Rochester, NY-based band has also been busy creating something other than music — coffee. Collaborating again with local Rochester roasters, Glen Edith, Joywave recently unveiled Joewave 4. This marks the fourth release in a series of original coffee blends they’ve been creating with Glen Edith since 2015 and is just one of the local entrepreneurial projects that showcases the Joywave’s commitment to their hometown.
While separated for the last year, the band — Daniel Armbruster: Vocals, Paul Brenner: Drums, Joseph Morinelli: Guitar; Benjamin Bailey: keyboard – will return to performing live this year, including performances at BottleRock, Summerfest and Riot Fest in September and Darn Good Music Fest in August.

March 19, 2021 – Earlier today Joywave released their song “After Coffee,” a contemplative and collective sigh set to music, ruminating over the pleasures of the mundane. The song comes almost a year to the day that the Rochester-based alt/rock band released their third album, POSSESSION, on March 13, 2020 – the day the world shut down and what the band called “the worst possible day.”
While not a pandemic song, the sentiment is relatable. Notes Joywave frontman Daniel Armbruster, “Some listeners will undoubtedly hear their own 2020 experiences in the lyrics, but to me it’s just waking up, pouring the coffee, petting the cat, and enjoying the silence.” This revelation came about as the band’s tour plans came to a halt and they found themselves off the road and at home for an extended period of time – a first since the release of their debut album HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW? In 2015.

Additionally, Joywave will be the featured artist on this week’s GRAMMY Spotlight Saturday series for March. The in-depth interview will be available to watch tomorrow, March 20th and can be found here.
The band – Daniel Armbruster: Vocals * Paul Brenner: Drums * Joseph Morinelli: Guitar* Benjamin Bailey: keyboard, guitar, vocals –have been separated since lockdown and are looking forward to unleashing more music, more innovative creative visuals and getting back to performing live this year.

March 13, 2020– Joywave released their third album, Possession, today. The 12-song collection speaks to the noise and chaos surrounding us and could not be more timely. “Our heads are spinning. Every day is crazier than the last. Every screen we walk by is shouting at us, demanding our undivided attention. Control over our own lives is constantly under siege,” notes Armbruster. Possession explores these themes at both a societal and personal level, ultimately encouraging listeners to zoom out and see the big picture.
Recorded and produced at the band’s studio in Rochester, NY, by frontman Daniel Armbruster and mixed by Dan Grech-Marguerat (The Killers, Liam Gallagher, Lana Del Rey,) Possession includes previous released songs, “Blank Slate,” “Obsession,” “Blastoffff!,” Like A Kennedy” and their current single, “Half Your Age” currently moving up the alternative radio charts. Continuing with the band’s creative use of noteworthy samples and field recordings, Possessionis woven together with audio from Voyager’s Golden Record(launched by NASA in 1977). Curated by Dr. Carl Sagan and affixed to the front of Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, the disc was designed to convey a basic understanding of humanity to intelligent lifeforms in far corners of the universe and was also the inspiration for the album artwork.

ABOUT JOYWAVE: Weaving blissed-out synths and unstoppable dancefloor grooves with euphoric hooks, exuberant wit, and uncommon emotional depth, Joywave has spent much of the past decade holding an aural mirror to society, concocting a distinctively modern approach towards pop music that is both organic and synthetic, much like our own day-to-day lives. Weaving blissed-out synths and unstoppable dancefloor grooves with euphoric hooks, exuberant wit, and uncommon emotional depth, Joywave has spent much of the past decade holding an aural mirror to society, concocting a distinctively modern approach towards pop music that is both organic and synthetic, much like our own day-to-day lives. The Rochester, NY-based band first came together in 2010 to put live flesh on the bones of songwriter-multi-instrumentalist Daniel Armbruster’s original home recordings. A series of visionary mixtapes and EPs followed, as did Big Data’s RIAA gold certified 2013 single, “Dangerous (Feat. Joywave),” a #1 hit at Alternative radio as well as a top 10 multi-format smash. 2014’s HOW DO YOU FEEL? EP was fast followed by Joywave’s full-length debut album, HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW? The LP spawned a string of multi-format hits, including “Dangerous,” multiple versions of which were then showcased on 2016’s innovative remix collection, SWISH. The following year saw CONTENT make a top 10 debut on Billboard’s “Heatseekers” chart upon its arrival, powered by the Alternative radio favorites, “Doubt” and “It’s A Trip!”
Joywave has proved just as prolific and popular on the road, performing countless headline dates, show-stealing sets at international festivals spanning Lollapalooza, Coachella, Firefly and the UK’s Reading/Leeds, and support runs with such like-minded artists as The Killers, Bastille, Young the Giant, Cold War Kids, Walk the Moon, Bleachers, Metric, Sir Sly, Bishop Briggs, Thirty Seconds To Mars, and more.

HAUNTING NEW SINGLE HERALDS UPCOMING THIRD LP
LIVE SCHEDULE INCLUDES HEADLINE SHOWS
AND HOLIDAY CONCERTS
“BLANK SLATE” AVAILABLE NOW FOR STREAMING AND DOWNLOAD
Joywave have released their haunting new single, “Blank Slate,” available now on Cultco Music/Hollywood Records for streaming and download; a companion video is currently in post-production and will premiere later this month.
Produced at Joywave’s own studio in Rochester, NY by band founder Daniel Armbruster, arranged by Armbruster and his fellow band members Joseph Morinelli, Paul Brenner, and Benjamin Bailey, and mixed by Dan Grech-Marguerat (The Killers, Liam Gallagher, Lana Del Rey), “Blank Slate” presents another striking glimpse at the Joywave’s wide-ranging sonic influences, its future-facing R&B approach (via a devilishly creepy keyboard line) masterfully accentuating Armbruster’s transformative lyrical content.
“A large portion of our new record deals with this idea of ‘possession,’” Armbruster says in an exclusive Audio Commentary, “and ‘Blank Slate’ is no different. It’s about truly giving yourself over to another person, not being too rigid and allowing yourself to be changed, which is really scary. It’s hard to be that vulnerable and it’s easy to get hurt. The song always sounds like dancing skeletons to me, but this is actually only the second or third ‘spookiest’ song on the album.”
LISTEN TO “BLANK SLATE”
“Blank Slate” continues a series of noteworthy new single releases from Joywave, including “Obsession“ and “Like A Kennedy.” Both tracks were accompanied by equally imaginative videos, streaming now via the band’s official YouTube channel. What’s more, “Obsession“ is joined by an exclusive Marvel Comics visualizer, starring The Avengers – including self- proclaimed Joywave fan Captain America – and streaming now via the official MarvelMusic VEVO channel.
“Blank Slate,” “Obsession,” and “Like A Kennedy” stand together as an unmistakable display of Joywave’s evolution from the basement to the big stage, fearlessly assimilating genres, motifs, and big ideas into its own one-of-a-kind identity. Additional new tracks and companion visuals will be unveiled in the coming months, followed in 2020 by the eagerly awaited release of their as-yet-untitled third full-length LP.
Joywave – who this week wrapped a major North American run as special guests on Bastille’s successful “Doom Days Tour, Part 1” – has heralded their upcoming new album in recent months with a series of intimate live performances, including sold out shows in Los Angeles, Brooklyn, and their hometown Rochester, NY. “The Possession Sessions” conclude with an exclusive headline show at London’s The Lexington on November 20. From there, Joywave will return to America for a number of headline dates and holiday concerts, including X107.5’s Holiday Havoc, headlined by The 1975 and set for Tuesday, December 3 at Las Vegas, NV’s The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, and the 103.9 RXP Miracle on Platte Christmas Show, slated for Friday, December 6 at Colorado Springs, CO’s The Black Sheep. JOYWAVE RELEASES “LIKE A KENNEDY” VIDEO
INTIMATE CONCERT SERIES
LOS ANGELES, BROOKLYN, AND LONDON
Joywave has unveiled an incredibly powerful new companion video for their new single, “Like A Kennedy,” available via Cultco Music/Hollywood Records. Directed by Dear Mr. Quistgaard (tUnE-yArDs, Everything Is Recorded), the clip sees the Rochester-based band staging a surreal reenactment of the infamous Zapruder film, the shocking assassination played out on repeat in a seemingly endless hyperloop akin to our own unstoppable pattern of gun violence.
“Nobody is surprised by the violence and no action is taken each time that it occurs,” says Joywave founder Daniel Armbruster. “The violence is allowed to just continue and continue and continue. Obviously that is very relevant to where we’re at now. Every time there’s another mass shooting, all these people die, and you know, thoughts and prayers. And nothing changes.”

Produced at Joywave’s own studio in Rochester, NY, by founder Daniel Armbruster, arranged by Armbruster and his fellow band members Joseph Morinelli, Paul Brenner, and Benjamin Bailey, and then mixed by Dan Grech-Marguerat (The Killers, Liam Gallagher, Lana Del Rey), “Like A Kennedy” offers a clear display of the acclaimed band’s evolution from the basement to the big stage, to their current role as full-fledged pop iconoclasts, fearlessly assimilating genres, motifs, and big ideas into its own one-of-a-kind identity.
“I think a lot of people will probably try to fit this song into some type of political narrative,” says Armbruster in an exclusive Audio Commentary (streaming song alongside the song HERE), “but that’s really not the point. It’s a song about complete exhaustion and media burnout. It’s an anti-chaos song. Every screen you walk by DEMANDS your attention. Everything is BREAKING NEWS in all caps. It’s a really difficult time to think about the mundane small-scale things that have been the focus of human existence until very recently. I don’t think people should check out, but I think it’s beneficial to at least zoom out and not take the bait every time. It feels like everything is designed to keep us enraged 24 hours a day. We deserve a little sanity.”
Joywave just appeared at Dover, DE’s Firefly Music Festival and are currently hard at work wrapping up their eagerly awaited third full-length LP. “Joywave is the biggest band you’re sleeping on right now.”
Joywave have unveiled another remarkable new single. “Obsession” is available now via Cultco Music/Hollywood Records for streaming and download HERE.
Produced at Joywave’s own studio in Rochester, NY by Joywave founder Daniel Armbruster, arranged by Armbruster and his fellow band members Joseph Morinelli, Paul Brenner, and Benjamin Bailey, and then mixed by Dan Grech-Marguerat (The Killers, Liam Gallagher, Lana Del Rey), “Obsession” virtually encapsulates the genre-busting history of Joywave into one glorious track, melding irresistible electronic pop with typically sharp social commentary to fashion what Armbruster calls “a Cliff’s Notes version of where the band has been and where they intend to venture next.”
“I’m sure I’m not the only person who does this,” Armbruster says in an exclusive Audio Commentary (streaming HERE), “but I have a tendency to latch onto work, or art, or any number of things, to keep other, scarier thoughts in check. As long as I’m focused and feel a sense of purpose, I’m ok. I’ve always had this fear that if I stop and look behind me I’ll say ‘Wow, I’ve come really far’ or ‘Wow, I’m really high up right now’ and fall. I meant that figuratively of course, unless I’m in a glass elevator. I hate glass elevators.”
STREAM/DOWNLOAD“OBSESSION”
Long known for their playfully subversive multi-discipline creativity, Joywave is collaborating with Marvel Comics to celebrate “Obsession” with an exclusive single-page comic starring none other than The Avengers, including Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Thor, and self-proclaimed Joywave fan Captain America. The comic – written by James Asmus (X-Men) with art by J.L. Giles (Black Panther: Soul of a Machine) – will be featured in over 90 different Marvel publications throughout the month of August. As if all that weren’t excitement enough, the comic sees Joywave themselves featured on original poster art created exclusively for the band by Runawaysartist Michael Ryan; an exclusive “Obsession” visualizer incorporating the imagery is streaming now via MarvelMusicVEVO, the official YouTube channel of Marvel Music, HERE. Lastly, Joywave’s Daniel Armbruster and Paul Brenner will mark the momentous event as featured guests on an upcoming installment of the official This Week In Marvelpodcast, available via Android and Apple Podcasts HERE.

“Obsession” follows the recent release of the extraordinary and chill-inducing song “Like A Kennedy,” available now via Cultco Music/Hollywood Records for streaming and download HERE. The track is joined by a powerfully resonant companion video, streaming now via the band’s official YouTube channel HERE.
“Obsession” and “Like A Kennedy” each offer an unmistakable display of Joywave’s evolution from the basement to the big stage, fearlessly assimilating genres, motifs, and big ideas into its own one-of-a-kind identity. Additional new tracks and companion visuals will be unveiled throughout the year, followed in 2020 by the eagerly awaited release of their as-yet-untitled third full-length LP.
On the touring front, Joywave has just been announced as special guests on Bastille’s upcoming “Doom Days Tour, Part 1.” The dates get underway September 16 at Philadelphia, PA’s The Met and then continue into late October.
